Art Direction
This week was all about art direction. To start with I didn’t really know what it was but now I can see how important it is and how often designers should think about it. It is about evoking emotion in your users and creating a lasting impression.
Task
We were given the task of taking the words “Apollo Space Program” and giving it an art direction. This didn’t have to be our final decision on the direction of this project, so I wanted to keep my ideas open.
Inspiration
I like the idea of the Apollo flights and the rockets themselves. When looking for inspiration, I found a lot of blueprints for rockets which I thought looked very cool visually. We only had one hour to do this task so I decided to go for it.
Sketches
I liked the idea of the “Apollo Space Program” written alongside the rocket as it flows well. I also knew I wanted to add the date in there too.
Digital
I like the hand-drawn look of this, especially since it has blueprint file paper in the background. The image is something I took from Pinterest, however, if this was the direction, I wanted to go in I would, of course, draw my own illustrations. The typeface used is “Montserrat” for both the title and date. I increased the leading to elongate the title, so it works well alongside the tall rocket. I kept the colour pallet a simple black and white with a faint blue for the grid paper.
Overall, I am happy with how it turned out. I will consider developing this idea further after more research and experimentation.
