Week 8 Animation Homework:

For this weeks homework we were tasked with creating a short animation with a flour bag to help learn about the use of Key-frames and inbetweens. By the end of the week I created 3 different animations using a flour bag, the first just making an animation by myself, for the second I made an animation after watching some of the homework videos that were provided to us and the third and final animation I just wanted to have some fun and see how much I could exaggerate a flour bag jumping.

Animation 1:

This is the first of my three animations, down below is a few gifs that show my progress when making the animation, first being the key frames, second being the first therebetween of the animation along with a timing pass and the final being the completed rough animation of the movement. When making this I knew exactly what I wanted the sack to do, fall from the sky, curl back and hop upright, so to help me get a more believable motion I referenced a video of someone kicking up to the ground while lying on their back. I’m fairly happy with the outcome I wouldn’t really want to make any changes outside of maybe giving the curl back some extra frames to help with the anticipation, overall though I was fairly happy with what I made.

Animation 2:

For the second animation I watched some of the homework tutorials showing us how we could approach making the sack move. Since I had already created my own I wanted to try and re-create the motion shown in the video, it was surprising difficult for my however, espically when the sack’s “legs” kck out in front of it, I spent a while trying to make it look a lot more fluid and I felt like I did an alright job at the end, overall though I feel like I could have done a bit more to make look better.

Animation 3:

This is the final animation I done, For this I just went all out making look as exaggerated and as crazy as possible. For this one I wanted to try and imitate something like Japanese Sakuga with crazy explosions and show of force along with all of the debris scattering everywhere. For this I referenced sakuga scenes from anime such as One Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100 and various other one, I wanted to try and focus on those two the most simply because I like how they portray destruction in their animation. Overall I am happy with the final product, I’m pleased with the impacts, the use of squash and stretch and how the debris flies up from the ground. While I’m happy with the product I could have added much more to this, things such as visual effects, dust and wind. I could also have made the impact much more violent, having the sack quake and jitter in place like it’s unstable with the amount of force it has contained in it. I also could have sped up the animation of the sack launching itself into the air further displaying the amount of force within the sack

Storyboard homework:

For the second half of our homework we were tasked to create a storyboard for a five to eight second animation that will merge with other animation clips from people in my animation group and make a looping animation.

For my storyboard I was tasked with creating the last storyboard before the loop ends meaning that I have to make sure it links up with the start of the animation loop which I did so with the blank screen at the end of the board. For my work I think I did a decent job at conveying the movement I want these characters to have, in addition to showing cut jump and zooms. However I know I have a lot more to learn when it comes to making storyboards so I’ll be continuing to learn in my own time to help achieve a more professional standard with my boarding. I noicited after the fact that one of my jump cuts goes from a scene with a character’s head zoomed in, into another character’s head who’s zoomed in, I could potentially fix this by having the second thumbnail zoomed out to show the character’s entire to help prevent any confusion.

For the animation itself I picked to animate two different characters that being the Protagonist, Chip and the Antagonist, Joe. For the board I wanted to have chip pull out his revolver and fire a shot into the air while standing on a table to get the attention of Joe, this then leads to Joe who’s talking to someone before pausing to see what the noise was, after looking for a moment he realises who it is and it then cut to Chip reeling back for a punch.
