Introduction to the module

All undergraduate students in the School of Communication and Media are required to undertake a project in their final year. The project is one of the most challenging aspects of your degree course, but also one of the most rewarding.

It spans two semesters and includes two pieces of work. Therefore, one third of your total mark in final year comes from your project on this module.

How will I be taught on this module?
Semester 1

In the first semester, there will be a series of lectures from weeks 1 to 8.

Lectures will cover:

  • the key stages of undertaking the dissertation
  • selection of a research area
  • engagement with the literature
  • selecting a research methodology
  • skills, knowledge, and understanding required for the dissertation

Due on Friday of week 3, a typed research project outline form on a chosen topic. The form is on the module Blackboard page.

From this outline, each student will be assigned a supervisor. This supervisory relationship will support the students’ management of the project.

Students are expected to independently access learning resources on the area of enquiry. To support this, lectures on library resources are provided for each course in the ‘Library resources’ area.

The library lectures include:

  • resources which you can access for your literature review
  • guidance on how to search for and retrieve literature
Semester 2

In semester 2, there are no taught lectures. Students will continue to work under the guidance of their supervisor in the development of their project. Workshops will also be held in semester 2 on quantitative analysis. Those who intend to undertake quantitative projects must attend these sessions.
