Homework: Bouncing Ball

For homework we had to animate a ball bouncing, which a did on Procreate:

During this week we started to learn the fundementals of animation. Alec gave us a leature on how to draw with Krita. To start off the exercise we started with moving a ball in a linear line back and forth. To do this we followed the instruction on how to first draw a circle and get it to move back and forth, by using frames and onion skin.

Next we also animated a ball rolling up and down a curvy path. Like the first exercise we did this by moving the ball frame by frame on the slopes but this time gave the ball more physics by adding antcipation to its movments. Unlike the first exercise where the ball has no character, this one brought live to the object. At the peck of a hill the ball would slow and then as it tipped over the edge of the hill it sped up till the next peak. In addition to this, I also added a part where at the last slope the ball does not have enough momentum so rolls back down the hill and the rolls back and forth like a seesaw until its stops all together.

Unfortnately I could not find the files for these 2 exercises as I didn’t transfer it over from my Uni PC but if evidence is needed I can try and assess it when I next use that computer.

World Building: Spirit Sky Fish

This week was spent finialising the story for our group animation and who would be doing which scene. Here’s what we decided on:

After confirming our roles, we discussed characters designs and confirmed the final designs:

  • Amaka (credit Manny)

  • Whale ‘Boba’ – Acceptance (credit Manny)
  • Rabbit – Denial (credit myself)

  • Elephant Seal – Anger (credit Johnathan)

  • Fox – Bargining (credit myself)

  • Polar bear – Depression (credit Jorja [top] and Lyndsey [Bottom])

  • Amka’s aunties (credit Manny)

  • Amka’s late mother (credit Manny)

What we kept in mind during the character design process was that we are trying to capture Indigenous Inuit people so we did not want to cultural appropreiate these characters in anyway. We all did some of our own research first before we designed our characters. For example, both Amka’s mother and aunties have face markngs called ‘Kakinniit’, traditional inuit tattooings that hold cultural meanings and symbolise important aspects from their lives.

Music

As for music I knew going into this group during week one that I saw a lot of simularities between the theme of this animation and the game ‘Gris’ (also about a girl who loses her mother and the 5 stages of grief). The music in Gris is very emotional and filled with passion so I thought that the ending song from the game, ‘Gris pt 2’ Would be perfect. I suggested it to my group and we all agreed that we should use this to play in the background of our animation.

Here’s the song:
