These are some images of my typeface specimen development. I tried different versions of each design with various letters to see what would work better.
This ‘Q’ was my favourite, I only tried these designs with black and white first to get a better grasp of what works well before I add colour. I think the positioning of the information paragraphs works well, I like how one paragraph is in the middle of the Q, it reminds me of a looking glass. However, what I feel didn’t work well was the positioning and spacing of the ‘palatino’ at the side of the specimen. I think there is too much space around it and the bottom sentence about the proportions of palatino doesn’t really go. Therefore I will have to keep working on this.
Here are some other versions of this design.
I used iPad templates for these to see what would look best. I did this to see what works on each type of screen. I like all of these designs but I feel like the ‘g’ and ‘s’ specimens don’t work as well as the ‘Q’ because they aren’t big enough and don’t take up as much room on the screen. However, what I think what works well is the way they letters are cut off at the top of the screen.
Here are some other designs I tried out.
This is the design I like the least, I just don’t feel like this design reflects Palatino’s elegance. I liked exploring shapes along with type in this design, however I feel like the triangle is too dark, taking way from the type itself. I like the contrast of white type on the black corner, however I feel like I should experiment with colour on this design as it may be a more successful outcome.
This is another design that I tried out on Abode XD.
I was surprised at how much I liked these designs when I created them digitally. I like the shadow that is reflected off the letters, I think it adds depth to the typeface. I think the ‘Palatino’ on the side of the ‘f’ works well in particular. I would also like the explore these in colour as I think I could make them quite abstract and intriguing with a mix match of colours.
