Typeface Specimen Sketches

These are some of the first sketches of ideas for my typeface specimen of ‘Palatino’. I didn’t have a plan for most of these, I just wanted to see where my pencil took me. I had inspiration from other typeface posters I done research on. I think some of these turned out well, the only thing that is missing is the paragraph about the history of Palatino. From these samples, I then chose three of my favourites and expanded my designs.

Three final designs.

I chose this one as one of my final three because I think it looks the most elegant, although it may seem simple, that is what I like about it. Since Palatino is such a timeless and sophisticated font I wanted to design a typeface that reflects that and I think I have done it. I like how I zoomed in on the Q, making is almost abstract. I think that when I am transferring this design to a digital one, experimenting with colour will be interesting and could possibly transform this specimen even further.

I decided that I liked this one more than others because of the shadowing and I also liked the use of the single letter. I like that the page isn’t crowded with letters and just focuses on the beauty of details of just one. In this case I chose f, d and l all lower case. I did this because I feel like they have interesting and nicely elongated forms as lower case letters. I feel the shadow effect will work well on the screen and create depth.

I chose this design because I think the small triangle in the corner of each design is intriguing and further compliments the letters that are placed opposite. I chose to criss-cross both capital and lower case letters because I think both are so lovely in their own way it is nice to see them side by side. However, I am concerned that the addition of the shape will take away from the typeface itself. I will just have to see how this design will turn out on the screen.
