Week 3- Etiquette

This week Daniel explained the basic rules that will be expected within a design studio/ workplace. Daniel talked about various areas including:

  • Basic rules
  • Meetings
  • The phone
  • Emails

Some notes about emails-

More notes I took during the lecture

This lecture was very fact/ advice heavy which included a lot of tips like be on time and don’t bring smelly food, etc. I listed all of the advice given below.

The best advice

Watch and learn. A point the Daniel made that really stuck with me was to watch and learn what is going on, what people are doing and how they are doing it. I think this is an easy thing to do but would provide a lot of clarity and insight. I think that this will be an issue on placement as most of them are online so you aren’t able to look around a studio for example.

Class task

During this lecture we had a class task, it was to conduct a meeting about the topics discussed in the lecture. each person in the group was assumed a role from:

  • Notetaker
  • Meeting leader
  • Contributor
  • Dumb question asker

Reflection

Our group did well, we discussed some of the topics that Daniel mentioned; such as dress code we all weren’t really sure what type of clothes you wear in a design studio so we discussed that as well as others such as answering the phones and greeting people when they come in for meetings. I enjoy group work and hearing from my peers. It was nice to keno they have the same worries and stress about placement as I do. Daniel as also set us an email task- where we pick emails to ‘practice’ write as if we were actually writing and sending them. This is to practice the language and skills of writing work emails, I will update my blog with the results of this task when I complete it. I learned so much within todays task, I mean some of it was common sense but other things like how to answer specific phone calls or tips on talking to people as soon as they come into the studio is something I hadn’t thought about but I should because before I know it I will be on placement!
