IXD302 – week 8 – Ideating

This week we were given the task of coming up with ideas for our week 8-12 digital product pitch presentation.

“its easier to dull down an exciting idea than it is to take a boring idea and make it exciting”

In our lecture we went through various methods of generating ideas:

  • MINDMAPPING –
  • BRAINSTORMING
  • VISUAL THINKING
  • SKETCHING
  • MAKING CONNECTIONS
  • ASSOCIATIONS
  • WORST WAY
  • WHAT IF/ HOW MIGHT WE
  • INSPIRATION
  • OSBORN CHECKLIST

In the workshop we then got into groups; each group chose a method of idea generation.  We discussed which method we thought would work best to start with, and we felt that brainstorming would get our creative juices flowing the most.

We used a random word generator for this exercise as well as post-it notes allowing us to quickly jot down our ideas.  The word generator was a huge help to us as it allowed us to consider lots of different areas and problems that could be solved with digital products.

For each word combination we thought of product ideas and wrote them down on individual notes.  With every idea it lead us to thinking of more variations and products that were different but similar.

We organised the ideas into 3 different categories: great, good, and mediocre.

Great:

These were our favourite ideas which we thought could be the most helpful to the users involved, and the most successful if brought to market.

Good:

These ideas could be useful but were either too niche for worthwhile usage or else they had already been done to a standard which couldn’t really be improved upon.

Mediocre:

These were mainly starter ideas which allowed us to get into the way of ideating and thinking creatively; many weren’t that useful or original enough to be brought to market.
