IXD302 – week 6 – Content writing for my proposal

I started writing my content before looking at visuals so I could be able to gauge the sizing and layout of the various sections.

I based a lot of it on what the book  – Project Guide To UX Design said, and found it to be a great help when writing my content.

PROJECT OVERVEIW:

Hill Street Belfast Ltd is seeking to create a new online web presence.  This web presence provides Hill Street customers with an ability to research and purchase products through a website as well as other services and benefits available through the company.

The goals of the online web presence are

  • To bring awareness to Hill Street’s cafes, restaurants, and services
  • To help customers contact Hill Street staff and gain more information about Hill Street
  • See upcoming events and book time slots
  • To allow customers to find social media and other contact information such as email

PROJECT APPROACH:

I dedicate a portion of every initiative to understanding industry, your competitors, and how they do business in order to be as informed as possible prior to beginning the project.

I work closely with your subject matter experts and users to define the requirements for building the web presence correctly

In this phase I create and develop all the pieces of a project/ product.  In my experience, any development phase requires a lot of heads-down, focused work effort but also timely, open communication with the team.

I will also create iterations of the project before deciding which is the right version to choose.  The iterate phase is repeated throughout the entire lifecycle of the project.  I will move as quickly as possible to bring the project to life, and this often requires creating multiple iterations in rapid timelines.  This requires direct and timely involvement from you and your dedicated resources in order to understand which iterations pique your interest and which don’t.  The end result is the product you’ve specified – and helped create.

I test every project throughout the course of my render phase; however, I also require an extra set of eyes –from your designed user group / audience group to perform goal based testing.  This additional round of testing helps ensure that as few stones as possible are left unturned in order to deliver a project that’s been rigorously evaluated from multiple levels.

Upon successful completion of the five previous phases and your signed approval, I will enable the solution and take it live.

SCOPE OF WORK:

The scope of work will explain who is responsible for various project aspects:

Bethixd (designer)

Bethixd will focus solely on the user experience design aspects of Hill St Belfast’s website.

Hill Street Belfast (client)

Hill Street Belfast will provide detailed feedback on all aspects of the web presence in accordance to the project plan.

Hill Street Belfast will provide any required assets for use in the project, this is detailed in the “assumptions” section.

ASSUMPTIONS (EXPECTATIONS FROM HILL STREET BELFAST):

It’s necessary that Hill Street Belfast provide the following assets and resources.  An inability to provide these assets and resources in a timely and complete manner may contribute to the unsuccessful or delayed delivery of this project.

The following assets and resources are expected:

  • Timely access to all required Hill Street Belfast employees
  • Timely access to all required assets of the project in current state, including any source files, if available.
  • Content, as required and including but not limited to
    • Fonts that need to be purchased
    • Stock images
    • Videos
    • Audio

For this section for the start I included that I needed access to employees on the Hill street team, source files, and content including fonts that may need purchased, stock images that may need purchased, as well as videos, and audio.  I also made sure to note that if these things weren’t provided with, this would cause delay that would not be my fault.

DELIVERABLES:

Brand Identity:

A brand identity will be created before the website, and will include the creation of brand guidelines.  This includes tone of voice, brand values, and a brand dictionary.  A monogram or visual marque, colour scheme, typography, and wordmark will be created and decided on after the establishment of the brand guidelines.  All of these elements will be created before the Hill Street Belfast website.

Website:

For Hill Street Belfast’s website, I will be creating the following different features:

Home page

This will be the first page that greets the users, it will include a call to action button, allowing viewers to click it and find exactly what they’re looking for.

Explore Hill Street

Includes information such as reviews, menus, and opening times with restaurants, bars, clubs, shops, and cafes.  A map as well as upcoming events will also be included here.

History and culture

This page will include the historical information, and cultural information about the street.

Where to stay

This will provide the user with places to stay, prices, and previous customer reviews

Get in contact footer and page

This will provide users with contact information (email, phone number, social media).  Upcoming events will also be listed here.

For this section I researched the difference between the deliverables section, and the creative brief section.  “Deliverables” includes the overview deliverables the client is asking you for as a whole.  “Client Brief” is a rundown/ breakdown of your work process, and the necessary backup work that needs to be completed. I was able to write this section more easily after having a look at Cathedral Quarter, and Titanic Quarter’s websites – this allowed me to understand the page sections and necessary workload.

CREATIVE BRIEF:

Week 1:

Competitive analysis: I will begin by looking at other competitors with similar marketing techniques and a similar user base.  This will help me to weigh up the pros and cons of their design strategy, and see what works and what doesn’t.

Week 2:

User research: User research will include creating surveys for the intended audience.  After surveying and reading about these users I will create user personas and user scenarios in order to understand their needs before the branding and wireframing process is started.

Week 3:

Brand Identity guidelines: I will begin by moodboarding and researching other brand identities.  A set of brand guidelines will be created (includes tone of voice, brand values, and a brand dictionary).

Week 4:

Brand identity visuals: After the guidelines are set I will create the logo (monogram or visual marque and wordmark) and establish colour scheme and typography.

Week 5:

Sketches/ iterations and wireframing of website: Wireframing on paper will begin and many iterations will be created.  Through refinement and feedback from the client decisions will be made and high fidelity mockups will then be created

Week 6:

Prototyping: A functional prototype on Figma will be created

Week 7:

Usability testing: Usability testing will commence on the intended user base.  This will help to uncover any lingering usability problems.

Week 8:

Refinement after testing: The website will be tweaked to fit the users needs, and through new iterations and feedback the final product will be presented.

For this section I had to think a lot about my work process with previous projects, and how long they took me.  For example, I was going to give myself only one week (week 3) to do the entire brand, however after thinking back to previous projects, this usually takes me longer as I need to come up with the brand guidelines as well as just the visuals in this case – as I’m making this brand from scratch.  Also, simply finishing the final week with “usability testing” is simply not an option, because this doesn’t leave enough room for refinements and making corrections for the users dislikes and usability issues.

OWNERSHIP & RIGHTS

This contract is work for hire.

Once all payment is final and made to Beth Buchanan, Beth Buchanan will no longer own any right to work regarding the web presence and brand for Hill Street Belfast.  The client (Hill Street Belfast) will be the sole owner of the work.

ADDITIONAL COSTS & FEES

Recommendations

Additional refinements, and usability testing can be provided by Bethixd following the web presence launch.  This will be priced at a £20 hourly rate.

Hill Street Belfast will also require a hosting service, as well as a custom domain for the site.  This will allow Hill Street Belfast to have full control over the site and doman once Bethixd has completed the set hours and payment is final.

In the event that outside resources are required (for example fonts, stock images, videos, and audios) are required, this shall be identified, discussed, and billed to Hill Street Belfast.

As usability testing isn’t a one time thing, and needs constant updating to stay up to date with industry standards, I decided to add an additional recommendation of hiring me again in the future to update usability.

I also recommended that the client get a hosting service, as im not responsible for it after my work is done, and it will give them full control

I mentioned the other assets that may need to be payed for by Hill Street that I will need access to.

PROJECT PRICING

This project will take 8 weeks from start to finish; however if feedback from Hill Street Belfast is delayed it may take longer.  Each week will either be 20 or 25 hours work, and each hour will be priced at a rate of £15.

This is allowing time for meetings, feedback, or any issues that are unexpected.
