This week we continued exploring sculpting mode in blender; however, we began to model an entire body. We learnt how to structure a body using specific shapes, this meant knowing the general proportions and structure of anatomy, which I had a general idea about, but quickly realised that my anatomy knowledge is something to work on in the future.
I created a mushroom traveller that was simple and easy to build due to the simplistic use of cylinders that was required. Even though I didn’t choose a model that would push my skills, I still wanted to practice the techniques and use of the mouse when using sculpting mode. I’m glad I chose a simple model for this task as it allowed me to become familiar with the basic techniques which will help me in the future with my next assignment.

After I finished my model, I focused on character model designs for assignment 2. These models are based on the artist who is known for the movie Hotel Transylvania. Gendy Tartakovsky. But before jumping into the designing process I wanted to research his style of characters so my designs would reflect his style of work. Something that stood out for me was the use of shape to show the character’s personality along with the over exaggerated expression and movements the character makes. This is achieved through simplistic character designs that focus on the shape of the character instead of details, this is clear through the Hotel Transylvania character silhouettes. The distinguished shapes were a factor I would focus on with my own designs.
Before my final character design was chosen. I wanted to expand my options, so I experimented with different themes. At the beginning I chose ironic themes like the fish women sushi chief or the ugly goblin that sells beautiful flowers. I then wanted to focus on detail work which allowed me to create the gun arm mobster, the beautiful Japanese puppet and the traveller. Lastly, I focused on characters that have district shapes like the fishbowl astronaut and the librarian gargoyle.
Below are my character designs
Fish Women Sushi Chief

Goblin

Fish Bowl Astronaut

Pirate at Sea

Librarian Ghost

Librarian Gargoyle

Mobster with a Gun as an Arm

Japanese Puppet

Lost Traveller

As a continues making these characters I was beginning to see a reoccurring problem which was… liking them all. So, currently I am unclear with my decision with what character I want to model but I am going to create finalised illustrations for each character which will hopefully lead me to my decision.
