Fine art- Final Piece

Transformation

I approached the brief “Transformation” with my previous gouache paintings in mind. This brought my attention to the birds I had included in my “30-minute” painting leading to my idea forming around the theme of birds.

To begin I sketched birds from the projection video and studied a slow-motion video of a bird taking flight (linked below) I wanted to add a surreal element to my painting therefore after choosing a colour scheme I made a connection to the “Phoenix” from Greek mythology.

The Phoenix is a symbol of rebirth and renewal. It is believed that the Phoenix is immortal and always reborn again. The rebirth nature of the Phoenix translates to my theme of transformation as the bird is converting through life and death. To communicate this, I used the slow-motion video mentioned above and painted the flight cycle of a bird. To me, a bird is most alive when flying therefore it symbolizes life returning to a Phoenix.

Fine art- Painting

Painting

Indian Inks Warmups

  • Below are 3 5minute warmups using Indian inks. I never used this medium before and enjoyed experimenting with gestural marks and watering down the ink.

Gouache

 15-minute painting (right)

  • For this painting, I wanted to experiment with colour. The projection was very blue-toned therefore I started out with blues and purples, the other colours stemmed from objects within the projection like clothes, umbrellas, and cars. We were tasked with capturing the moments in the projections which resulted in silhouettes of people crowding the background as well as a slight interpretation of the rain in the video by including streaks of blue in the background.
  • The model was wearing a mask which I found helped draw my attention away from the face and also allowed me to see the colours of the projection shine through.

30-minute painting (left)

  • For this painting, I went for the same colouring technique as the first. I tried to focus more on the images projected onto the model than on the clothes and background details. This projection was a video of birds. Shapes and the vague outlines of birds are scattered on the painting and are also hidden within the model’s clothes. I was enjoying the sound and atmosphere the video was created which prompted me to add some nature-like aspects to the background (eg. top left)

Charcoal Studies

  • Top: 5-minute study of the whole assemblage, Bottom: 3-minute study using shapes

  • Top: 15-minute study focusing on a particular part of the assemblage, Bottom: 20-minute study at a different angle

Collage

  • For the collage project, I made a small booklet with an A5 collage on the front and back, then an A4 landscape collage in the middle
