WEEK SIX – Assignment 2 Research

RESEARCH AND CONCEPT ART

We’ve been tasked to research the art style of Genndy Tartakovsky so we can design a character o fit into the world of Hotel Transylvania. I looked at old concept sketches by Tartakovsky to break down his style, I roughly traced over the main characters from Hotel Transylvania to break down the shapes commonly used. Tartakovsky’s style is shape based and uses a mixture of straight and curved lines with exaggerated anatomy and expressions. I noticed with some characters that their head shape tend to be made from two shapes, smaller shape on top and the bigger shape on the bottom for the face.

After researching, I sketched a few ideas down for characters. I focused on monsters in mythology more specifically the minotaur, the brownie/house elf, Kurupira, Joroguma etc. I tried to exaggerate with the characters’ anatomy using basic shapes and mixing angular with curved lines. I tried to convey the characters’ personality through their design and I feel I may have succeeded with some. My favourite design would probably have been Medusa but I feel it would be impractical as she had too much detail and would be difficult to model and rig.

I eventually settled on my design of a Scottish broonie/house elf. I felt his design would most likely fit into the world of Hotel Transylvania and was a fun design. As broonies are known to help out with chores in Scottish homes in folklore, I designed the character to be a butler working at the hotel. I designed his outfit similarly to the zombie porters, keeping to the colour scheme and the gold shoulder pads. I altered the original design slightly by giving his blazer two buttons instead of three. I gave the broonie a brown tartan handkerchief as a reference to Scotland and to his name Broonie/Brownie, the handkerchief also makes the butler look more sophisticated and clean. While designing the character I thought of his personality and how he’d interact with others in the world, I imagined he’d be an overworked, tired butler chasing after the guests (mainly the wolf pups), and speaking in a drawled tone. i designed a few food items he could potentially interact with, I drew the scream cheese from the first movie for fun, i also designed Eyes-ream and beetle juice (to reference  the cult classic Beetlejuice character). If I were to model the glass for the eye-scream and beetle juice
