Illustration – Little Lillies, Pawn Shop (Zine)

My main idea for this zine was to create a confusing atmosphere surrounding the small pawn shop called “Little Lillies.” The horror game “Little Nightmares” (2017), “Coraline” (2009), and the old TV show “Bagpuss” (1974) were my main three inspirations for this zine.

An element of my setting was influenced by the Disney film “Up” (2009). This being the scale of my pawn shop compared to the other two buildings. In one of the scenes we see Carl’s house squished between two skyscrapers, I took inspiration from this, to represent what type of world my character lives in.

The materials I used: Colour pencils & colour markers. A3 page.

The creature I created was inspired by “Little Nightmares.” I believe I did a good job at keeping my character mysterious instead of dangerous looking. I didn’t want it to come off as a threat, thus why I picked the colour purple – It was another way to use a dark colour, and for me to avoid using the colour black too. I used a contrasting colour for my character, green, to create a relationship between her and the item that she finally found within the shop.

Personally I didn’t like how the final page turned out, and I tried to fix it with coloured marker and some crosshatching. Even though the back page doesn’t look like part of this zine with how I finalized it, I ended up liking it more than how the coloured pencil turned out. I found the coloured pencils smudged too easily, so I will be taking this piece digitally because I really enjoyed working with the compositions, characters and the overall concept for this zine.

My favorite page within this zine is the page where the creature is towering over my female character, I like the simplicity of the use of my three colours, adding just a hint of a darker background around the creature than her.

I played around with the colour palette in my sketchbook, unsure of what the first two items were going to be. In the zine, my character is faced with two items before she is seen with a frog toy in the last page, if I were to change the colours, I’d change them to a brighter red colour. I originally thought of the colour yellow – Adding yellow would also allow be to add sunny highlights, however I didn’t want there to be any “happy” colours within this zine. I kept to one side of the colour wheel, and I didn’t want to add any extra colours when there was no need for it.
