Gender – Case Study – Contextual Research & Understanding

Gender – Case Study.

Georgia Totto O’Keeffe.

American Modernist Artist Georgia Totto O’Keeffe produced large flower and landscape themed paintings between the times of 1908 to 1972.  She was inspired by Arthur Wesley Dow, creating her own personal style from his influence. The meaning between her work was unusual for her time. Her work symbolized females, the female sex,  and sexuality as a whole. Close up images of flowers resembled that of the female genitals, making the responses to her work at the time mixed – As she did in fact create, and continue to create what was seen as controversial pieces for her time period.

O’Keeffe explored the meanings and views of her paintings with and through her own experiences as a woman in the 1900s. She is often referred to the title “Mother of American Modernism,” for creating such vulnerable pieces of work; linked not only to women who were struggling at the time, but to feminism too.

O’Keeffe mixed and matched a range of mediums during her time creating art, such as: Pastels, oil paints, water colour and charcoal. Her skills with composition, line and colour also helped to strengthen the final look of every painting she made.
