This is just a continuation from the last blog post, I’m just separating them so the blog post before isn’t just super long. Anyway. animated documentary was a stable in primary school, for some reason teachers just loved sharing these in my school, maybe it contributed to the reason why I wanted to do animation.
DOCUMENTARY
Documentary is where there’s an examination on a subject, event or facts. There really isn’t any art history connecting this from what I’ve seen, so why animation was combine with documentary? it doesn’t need to address something directly, it also gives the audience visuals to a rough image of the situation, possibly also making it more engaging and fun to watch.
CONFLICTS
Too bad for animation some people don’t like the idea of having art portraying facts, it gets downplays the experience creating a feeling that the information is misrepresented or being slightly more bias or that audience may not be able to tell what’s real and what’s fake. But we do have a group who believe that intimate stories ignore the reality to encourage empathy and that audience do know what’s real and what’s fake.
EXAMPLES OF ANIMATERD DOCUMENATRY
Here’s just two of the videos we had looked in class, can’t find the third one or import the video. Overall, I’m not someone who’s a fan of documentary videos of people but animal documentary do tickle the right places of the brain.
This documentary was very fun to watch, the audio was collected from council estates and retirement homes recreated in vox pop’s style. It’s comedic with the choices of animals and design, how well the actions capture the speaker’s emotion.
This documentary focuses mainly on the individual’s emotion and action, From the first story, the art style reminds me of childhood books I read such as Roald Dahl. This is probably due to him talking about being 15 which is pretty young, to step around him being young it uses also bright colours and slightly messy colouring.
The style here makes me believe that the person telling the story wasn’t really in touch with their ex in their whole relationship, the people are like voids while the background was incredibly detailed and beautifully detailed in comparison to the first where the characters are more detailed than the background.
Here the story has details for characters and background, the bright colours together making it feel romance with the warm lighting. The style also tells the audience this is from some years before as the style is vintage.
Overall, animated documentary has it’s own charms that I’m not familiar with but it’s interesting to compare this to the other animated types. The main thing I like about this is the story telling aspects along with the visuals but again I’m not a big fan of documentaries, some of the topics are strange or just cringe.
