Setting the Scene

Now with everything made, I can now try setting up the scene with posing my character and adjusting some of the touches on the environment. This whole process only took around 3 days to set up allowing me plenty of time to edit the screen shots and giving me time to do multiple poses.

This is the second last video of Michael’s playlist that I’ve been following along making sure I didn’t start jumping forwards and backwards on this assignment. I believe I’m very close to finish now but even so I’m still stressed with my time.

POSING

I had bounce between texturing and creating bones for my character depending if I was at home or in class, in class I was creating these bones since the latest substance wasn’t downloaded at the time. When the second time I came onto the pcs in class, my bones were all hidden. I had try alt + H to unhide them but even with this, it never came back until Jessica was able to help me unhide one bone. It would make sense to be able to select all the bones and do the same process but it didn’t work therefore causing me to spend a few minutes unhiding all my little bones.

When the bones were finally unhidden. I slapped in a long cylinder as one of the fallen tree trunks allowing me to have a base to model my creature around that I can then insert into my unreal engine without having to tweak it a whole lot.

I import the default pose first into unreal to scale the creature to fit the surrounding which was easy enough, just needed to adjust it from 1 to 0.5

With that I can then import my posed creature into the scene and do some small adjustments making sure that the feet was touching the log.

APPLYING MATERIAL

I may have messed up a few little steps on creating the UDIMS tiles and textures which then put me in a spot where I had to create three different materials for my monkey, it would be nice to have one simple material but overall it wasn’t that big of a problem and luckily I was able to just work around it.

I did make an extra material for the glowing eyes which I added after realising a few issues with my monkey that I couldn’t see until my textures were finally applied as we’re going to take a look at in the next section and how I fixed them.

ISSUES

Having a closer look, this man’s face is a little messy. The shell isn’t in the right positioned and there’s very awkward fur sticking out from the head coming from the neck fur. Also that some beetle pieces are floating and not making any contact with the body.

For some reason this made me stress out when these problems are super simple to fix.

FIXING ISSUES

Seeing how messed up the teeth is, I had to go back again to them and select all to remove it from all the vertex groups apart from the head so they’re not stretched in a funky way before applying the armature modifier which I have also forgot to apply to multiple parts of the body pieces such as the head piece and eyes.

With a few more adjustment on the pose mainly for the beetle parts and tail, it was ready to pop into unreal engine again where I can apply the textures again and make sure it actually had some type of contact with the log.

With this pose completed, I was much more comfortable going into my second pose which will be shown in the following posts. I’ll also need to edit the pictures and play around with some angles for my portfolio.
