Detailing

The second part of my blogs, I’ll be mainly just detailing the textures and adding in the colours of my monkey beetle creature. Again, most of which will be progress images rather than words describing what I’m doing. Enjoy

MAKING BRUSHES

Usually when I made custom brushes in blender, I’d use the alphas of white and black pngs but I was taught a new technique which was a little complicated at first but after a few tries it was easy enough to understand how to abuse. All of these brushes I’ve created are fur texture as there isn’t many other textures needed for my designs, I’ve spiced up the pen settings to create minor details to areas while using the area plane setting to create large fur patterns.

I’m personally a big fan of the second brush but when used respectively and layering it gets a little boring so I had also went ahead and created the last two brushes which gives it a little more personality.

SCULPTING DETAILS

With my brushes. I’m able to slap in nearly all my textures for my creature which is mainly just the fur, I’m extremely happy with the texture and how they came out. I had so much fun abusing my brushes on the neck fur. Not only did I sculpt the fur I did some minor touch up on the face to give it the monkey look and ear, anywhere else I had lower the strength of the brush and dragged it a little around the place to give it a fur texture which is very light.

Reason being I just wanted the neck fur to stand out more which is most likely will due to the contrast in colour.

Going back to Michael’s pipeline, he was able to skip a lot of steps such as the retopology and custom brush due to his character design.

SUBSTANCE

When exported into Substance, there was a problem when adding the high resolution onto the low resolution. Pixels would appear around the neck fur area, as someone who was still new to this program I had to call Henry for help which was easily fixed through changing up the bake settings and some of the modifiers on blender to a higher number.

With this problem fixed I can then apply the textures and tones onto my model, most of the beetle texture was created on substance while the fur was touched up in small areas that wasn’t very noticeable.

Again to Michael, from here I feel like I can easily follow the pipeline but right after I’ll be skipping a few videos. He has a lot of accessories and props to his character while mine doesn’t really have much.

This was the result I came out with which I was happy with until I thought maybe I could add some of my own highlights to areas and shadows which pushes out some of the features.

BUILDING ENVIRONMENT

With the textures and colours completed on my creature, I have set my mind to completing the environment then working around it to create to my pose. As shown below I made a very rough landscape through the sculpt before slapping in premade assets into the space.

When I finally was happy with the majority added assets, I went to add in some water in the middle. From watching this quick tutorial on youtube, I’m able to get the effect that I want. From here I started texture painting my sculpted land.

Overall, this didn’t take long as I did plan on using plenty of foliage to cover up the floor with grass or plants. At this point, this was the lighting I had going on and environment. In other blogs I did slap in a few extra trees and change the lighting quite a lot. Most of these assets were taken from Quixel Bridge within unreal engine and even if it’s taken from the Marketplace they still belong to Quixel Megascans except for the two listed below.
