After we presented our little presentation, we receive feedback from Henri and Mike. The problem I need to focus on is my cake and make it look less like a solid block, try and make the strawberries less flat, I’ll try and explore on that myself while for the previs I had spiced up. They had mention wanting the jump scene to be more dramatic to make it more funny through adding close up of faces and possibly a slow mow. I originally wanted to go back into the file and change it but Zoe our beloved team member decided to take over as I had redid the previs.
When we mentioned low poly effect we thought what we had was correct but it was suggest to shade smooth but add in more edges to make areas more sharp around edges, too bad we’ve already started doing the texture painting. So the solution I’ve came up with is still paint it on the models with no shade smooth, export it back to blender and then applying the shade smooth which we did for the rolling pin in class to see how it came out.
Since it’s week 6, I wanted to make note of what my group are trying to get done for this week. We also have module to hand in for the Tuesday so I said we could avoid voice calling for the week unless we all get it submitted before Tuesday. We could also do Wednesday but I personally would like a day to myself before going back into class.
We also finally came up with a name for our short:
TEXTURE PAINTING
Here’s just collection of images of me texture painting the designs, before leaving class, Zoe and myself had a little discussion on how some certain things should look such as icing just the the texture of the cake and cupcake. We also changed a few colours as Zoe thought the colour choices on one character she had to paint was mid.
CAKE
This is my character for the short, this time I made sure to add extra detail and make them more obvious. I spent more time looking at strawberries for reference and it definitely helped so much. Of course it did take longer but this really helps with understanding how to use substance painter.
DONUT
The problem with the donut is the colour choices, if this was a plain donut I could’ve played around with more of the details. But since it’s a chocolate donut there isn’t the ‘fry line’ to add and the texture is much more cakey, instead of the fry line the line is just much more darker so using a few reference images this is what I came up through texture painting.
This is when I thought I had this done but when exporting them back to blender there was a few problems. With these two ugly creatures side by side, I could tell that my new one was much more clean and boulder in colour to match with my group’s warm tone colours unlike my old one where I leaned into the colder tones.
Donut on the other hand was extremely pale in colour forcing it into the pastel zone, disgusting, I had to go back into substance painter and try to fix up the pink by just applying a red multiply layer and the end result doesn’t look pastel now in the chosen lighting. We still never got Eve’s texture painted images so I couldn’t really look at it for any inspiration and it all had to be referenced from my own research.
All I had to do was now just mess around with the image on Blender and see what results look the best. In the end, this is the piece I came up with:
