Retopology [WEEK 9]

I struggled with this week’s lesson, I didn’t know what I was doing or if I was connecting the pieces correct. In short, we create a shell around our model in quads so we can add on texture. Due to my redesign, I’m slightly behind in my creature sculpt so I didn’t complete the whole retopology for the elephant head.

In class, we were handed an elephant which we could practise retopology. Half way through did I realise there was a completed example for reference as shown below:

Compare to what I have completed in class:

As Mike walked around, he had commented on my mesh becoming messy around the mouth area so I had to redo this part, I’ll now try and complete this and draw the seams with the provided reference so I can see how the quads are wrapped around the shape and forms. This brings me back to the Zubat model, I had struggle with the N gons in that and hoping that through this practise, I can avoid them much less and help improve.

From these two videos, I had found the second one more useful as it gives me shortcuts and that create a frame for different parts help make the overall look less complicated and messy. I decide to bring this practise in my final sculp for my creature as it makes it look much more efficient to working around more complicated shapes.
