After my sculpt last week I wanted to look up some easier ways to speed up my workflow and some advice on approaching my sculpt in the right way. I found these two videos from Mike very helpful, One gave me a very clear 3 part Sculpting workflow that would solve my remeshing issues I was having, and the other gave me a quicker way to make nice fur.
Then I also found this tutorial that took me a bit more through blocking and even showed me how I could approach sculpting my Book Props and Stage using Boolean modifier. It is using Z-brush instead of Blender but it still helped to watch the process.
Then here I found cute easy way to Hard surface model stitches, I could use this for my character’s shoes or pants.
I went and made new turnarounds with some adjustments the the shapes. Here the belly is a circle and the pants will start higher up, like we see on the Human Fly character and on the head the cheeks stick out more and the head has started to sag from the perfect circle it used to be, here I have also pushed the eyebrows down creating this very grumpy look on the moth. This might not be the final emotion I go for in the end but it loosk good for now.
Then I went back and thought about what type of wings I wanted, did I want them to be more rounded and lifted or maybe more draped and weak liek fabric. I went and asked some classmates about what designed they preferred and the majority voted for the rounded more moth like design so I went with these.
Then I started to think of my colours that I wanted for my final design and I had made two versions of this, the more natural brown moth and the blue toned moth. I then asked some friends what they preferred for this scheme as well and I agreed with them by picking the more cartoony blue toned design.
Then I jsut brought these into my turnarounds to help me visualise the design better.
Texture Brushes
I went and made some brushes using some alphas I found online, these will hopefully save me time when it comes to my final sculpting process. I added these textures to different brushes by importing the alphas and adjusting the spacing and and mapping type to fit the texture and they made some nice results.
I didn’t have my Dyntopo on high enough for the thicker fur, but here I can make a range of fur and hair patterns that I will use for my Mothman’s neck fur and moustache by adjusting strength and mapping type.
This cotton brush I will use for the jumper.
The last brush I have here is for skin wrinkles, and I was thinking of using this around any age spots on the head of the Mothman, to add some quick subtle detail.
