Character Design-Exercises

During class time we were given some character design exercises and a time limit to try develop our creativity and develop our ability to see forms and shapes and make characters from these.

The first exercise was to take some random blobs, and make little characters from these. The first time I did this I was focussed too hard on if they looked right, or how detailed I could make them and you can tell I struggled. So I went back and redid this and found myself being a lot looser and having fun with it, making these goofy and crazy guys.

Then the other exercise was focussing on shape language and using references to create our own characters. For this we were given 3 images and had to make 3 characters inspired by each of the references. I had fun with this but I didn’t push my designs too far during class.

When I was home I quickly did another attempt at this, except this time I tried pushing the character I designed further while keeping some characteristics from my references. I had a lot more fun making mystical creatures from my references and trying to keep the essence of the people and their stance/outfits in my new designs.
