Research into the French animation history

1980 – 2023 Research

In the 1980s one of the most popular French animations to be released that year was the “The King and the Mockingbird” This animation The shepherdess and the chimney sweep was loosely based on the fairy-tale and is today regarded as a masterpiece of French animation. However, this animation begun its production in 1948 and took over 30 years for it to complete. In the span of the next 20 years after this film was finally made and released in 1980, the film industry would evolve so much in technology that animation films are so much different visibly and importantly made a lot more easily and quicker than it did just 20 years ago.

 

Most of the French modern animation have some proud connection to the film culture movement of the French New Wave who were the pioneers in 1950s films and was a new perspective of creating creative ways of filming. This movement was a way to break away from the classical Hollywood way of storytelling and breaking film makers rules with introducing a different interpretation of viewing realism. They continue their influence even up to the 80s, 90s and 20s. A good examples of a recent French animated film 2003 called “The Triplets of Belleville’, has inspired features of the New Wave movement style that are clearly seen in the animation, even with how they expressively drawn and portray their character in camera shot angles.

In the 1972 just seventeen years before the fall of the berlin wall that sparks a new era At the University of Utah, and man named Ed Catmull developed a method of creating computer generated movies. The computer-generated movies were a new way of developing animation and was one of the great new inventions for films. In 1983 technology invention such as the Internet helped French animation software Studios continued with enhancing the art of animation with advanced technology and now with extraordinary teams helping around the world in graphic designers, story artists, modelers, animators, programmers, and rendering artists it’s easier for talented people to get people together in making animation production quicker. While animators get more and more digitalised animation Apple computer company produced a method for creating 3-D films in 1993. this changed digital animation industry history forever when the famous American computer-animated comedy film Toy story movie was made in 1993. It used the new 3-D and beyond computer software made by Apple. This film was very successful and won BAFTA Awards. The great film computer software inspired many French and other animations around the world to create more 3-D animation story’s and shows. This is clearly shown in the years after 1993 by movies and shows such as, Oggy and the Cockroaches 1997 by Jean-Yves Raimbaud, Despicable me 2010 by French animation studio Mac Guff , A Monster in Paris 2011 by Bibo Films, Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir 2015 by Jeremy Zag (Company Zagtoon), and now Arcane 2021 by Fortiche production.

Arcane French production Fortiche is a great example of how far the French industry has pushed into developing 3D animation. The studio’s own graphic style blending 2D and 3D media with smart and fancy direction are at the heart of the Fortiche studio that they call their unique “ForticheTouch.” That won them lunching onto the biggest streaming platform “Netflix.” The studio also shown how they also work greatly around the world having production studios based in Paris, Montpellier, and Las Palmas (Spain). Other Animation companies such as “Love, Death and robots” delicate itself into getting animation industry around the whole world to come together into working together in short animation films For example, French production called “Unite image” animated Beyond the Aquila Rift (Volume 1 – Episode 7) Snow in the Desert (Volume 2 – Episode 4) another French studio called “Atoll Studio” animated Automated Customer Service (Volume 2 – Episode 1) these French animation are doing this to show or spread their ideas of stories and setting the stage for more international French animators. France in the modern era has firmly established itself over years as a respected producer of animated content. French feature films have now generated international interest more than ever, both among critics and audiences. French Animators to this day are proud of this country’s achievement of the rich amount of history and to have a big piece of their rooted culture in it.
