IXD104 Week 9: ‘Visualising data’

What is data?

The word data comes from the Latin language as it is the plural of ‘Datum.’ Data can be described as a collection of a single unit or single point of matter. There are many ways we can interpret data or display data. Data can be grouped on a word document, receipt, or graphs. With data being everywhere around us, it is hard not to miss. All the information you have stored about yourself is like in a bank account or website; this is your data; where all the information is stored or grouped together.

What is data Visualization?

Data Visualization is quite explanatory as it is data that is seen visually through graphs, diagrams, and pictures. Data visualization is an especially useful tool to display information as it is usually displayed in an easy to way to understand while being effective with what it is trying to show to others. It can help with the organization of data and help the presentation of your work. Data visualization within design has become a very aesthetic approach to displaying data and pictures as the combination of math and art has helped designers to create a modern outcome with their images.

James Round

James Round is an independent graphic designer and illustrator that became a senior designer at Human After All. James Round also designs freelance art and loves to create printed products and creative data visualizations. His work is highly respected due to where his work can be found as he has made data visualizations for the likes of the BBC, Wired Magazine and the Oscar winning film of 2021, ‘Parasite.’ James Round was asked to create the data visualization for the UK Tech: The Network Effect. Since creating that design, Round’s work has flourished and blossomed into something that has had a lasting effect for over a decade. James Round has said that it is his use of the chord diagram that gives him the most effective composition.

Giorgia Lupi

Being an information designer Giorgia Lupi has really dedicated her life to data visualization as she is an advocate for Data Humanism and the co-founder of Accurat which is a data driven design company. Giorgia Lupi is also an author with publishing books called Dear data and her new interactive book called Observe, Collect and Draw- A Visual Journal. Giorgia Lupi’s approach to data visualization is remarkably interesting as she is story telling through all the pieces she makes as she engages data through visual narratives with either print or digital media. Lupi shows that her way of presenting data is to create an appreciation of people and organizations. Interestingly Giorgia Lupi believes that it is data that is going to advance us as humans as it increases intelligence and triggers more from the brain. I liked this approach as it would be correct as it does advance us as we are learning the material that is presented.

George Hatzis

Geroge Hatzis is an Australian designer that is based in Sydney that has recently be moved to a senior product designer. When describing his work, Hatzis wants to show his work in a storytelling format but not too complicated as he likes keeping his work simple. His data visualizations are that of movies, tv shows and sports; combining is love for entertainment. His formats are very aesthetic and digestible for a user when presented. This form of art is a creative outlet for Hatzis as it allows him to adventure outside the box and create something new while letting him express his passion with something he knows very well.

Lies, Damn Lies and Steve Jobs Keynotes

When looking into Apple, this company is the leading brand for technology today. However, a great point was raised, why does Apple feel that success is not enough and why is it constantly striving to do better than it is? People’s trust in Apple is apparent even in those who are critical of the company, so why feel the need to not recognize this success and keep the same level Apple has always been. Steve Jobs in a lecture on Apple, was seen using a manipulating tactic to prove Apple’s success which many were confused as this is not a company that would need these tactics to be persuaded to buy into. With paying a lot of detail to his work, Steve Jobs using a manipulation tactic was not a mistake, it was a way to create even more intrigue for the company than there already is. Why does Apple feel the need to make more success than the crazy amount they already have? That is because our society runs on money and Apple’s success is still not enough, there is more that Apple can see to do better that will create more success in the future.
