Costume Designer
I’ve always been interested in fashion designers such as Enzoani and Mcqueen. However, I’ve found costume designing more intriguing. When watching movies or TV shows, the costumes make or break the watching experience. Depending on when the film or show is set, it is essential to create costumes to reflect that time period accurately or else you risk the audience becoming uninterested or lose their immersion. Shows such as “Killing Eve”, “Ratched” and “The Crown” all show the versatility of costume design and are all shows known for having fantastic costumes episode after episode. With “Killing Eve” having the most modern time period, we see the costume designer taking liberties with the fashion and constantly changing the main character, “Villianelle’s”, style sense. Whereas with shows such as “The Crown” we have different time periods where the costume designer must constantly change and update what the characters are wearing in order to keep up with the story line.
Meredith Markworth-Pollack
Markworth-Pollack is a well known Costume designer known for working on shows such as “Reign”, “Dynasty” and “Runaways”. I remember first coming across her work in the 2013 series of “Reign”. I instantly fell in love with the 16th century inspired costumes which clearly had modern influences. This mix of styles created beautiful work that I was instantly inspired by. Markworth-Pollack said how she was influenced by the abundance of material that history shows us of Mary Queen of Scots actual outfits as well as different runways such as Dolce and Gabbana and Alexander Mcqueen. She has said that with her costumes she wants the audience to be inspired by the different styles and to find ways to recreate clothes into their own styles themselves. She has spoken of her supportive nature towards DIY clothing and people using their creativity to create completely new and unique clothing themselves.
