Anastasia Samoylova
Anastasia Samoylova is an Russian-American photographer who works mainly with observational photography. She uses digital tools and commercial photography with her work. Her main themes are the environment around her as well as consumerism and picturesque scenes. With her work you can see the realism of photography mixed with her digital skills as the editing adds to the intrigue of the picture. I enjoy her work as each piece she creates is individual with its own personality and completely unique to all her other pieces while also holding that signature look that each of her pieces hold. Glass and reflection is a massive theme for her and is often seen in many of her pictures, this adds a sense of transparency to her work and allows the observer to gain a sense that there is more to the picture and more to see beyond the camera.
Stephen Gill
Stephen Gill is an English photographer from Bristol. He has said that his love for photography came from his fathers interest in insects and his Fathers love of collecting wildlife and plants from ponds to inspect later. In many of his photographs you can see the idea of the microscope that his father would have used as Gill likes to have the idea of one section of his photo much more zoomed in and focused while the surroundings blur into the background. Nature also clearly plays a big role in her work as it is his main focus in a lot of his pictures. I love the idea of focusing on one section and blurring out the rest that Gill uses in a lot of his pictures as I feel that it really draws the observer into his work and gives each picture a signature look that belongs to him.
Todd Hido
Todd Hido is an American artist from San Francisco. For his work he walks around different areas such as his neighbour hood and takes pictures of different scenes. He mainly focuses on buildings such as peoples homes at night time. All of his pictures have an unsettling feeling associated with each of them due to the colour scheme used in most of them such as greens or oranges. As well as this, he also has a series of photos of landscapes. These also contain this unsettling tone, however, there is also a use of blurring certain sections of the picture. This almost gives the effect of rain on the camera lens. Many of them are taken in snowy weather which usually would hold a sense of comfort. However, with Hidos combination of his colour scheme and blurring of sections, this unsettling theme is followed through to here.
We were given the task to create some photo pairings that contain similar components such as shapes or colours. I ave created a PDF containing my work here. – Photography – Amy Johnston 66
