Bernie Boston – Flower Power
On 21st October 1967, Bernice Boston, an American photographer, captured the image of a Vietnam war protestor placing a carnation in the barrel of a soldiers gun during the March on the Pentagon. Boston took this photo for the Washington Star newspaper. However, the editors did not see the significance of this photo and buried it. Boston on the other hand saw the message that it carried and entered it into many competitions and received many awards and prizes for it. This picture shows the contrast between those who simply wanted peace and those who counteracted their peace with violence. This picture is still relevant to today with many of the peaceful black lives matter protests and how they are met with police officers and violence. This picture is highly effective to show us what side of history we should be on and the courage that those protestors had in the face of guns and violence.
