As part of this module, I was required to deliver a pitch for my own unique business idea. But first, I had to come up with a unique business idea. I decided to settle on an app for my idea before anything else. Working within this constraint allowed me to be more creative with my ideas going forward.
In a paired brainstorm, I was then able to generate some ideas on paper. It didn’t matter how original or successful these ideas might be, as the point of this exercise was just to come up with as many ideas as possible to narrow down later.
Eventually I settled on two separate ideas to choose from: ‘Favorites’ and ‘Speedpop’.
Favorites was an app concept that would be able to track the user’s favorite things – such as movies, tv shows, books, music. And other random things like their favorite colour, country, food etc. Basically it would be a social media kind of app like Letterboxd that would match people based on their shared favorites and the system could then recommend similar ‘favorites’ that the user would like. Letterboxd only tracks movies however, and there’s really no app that covers everything. If you’re catching up with a friend you haven’t seen in a while, and they’re a user on Favorites – you could find what music they’re currently listening to, what games they’ve been playing etc. ahead of time and therefore you would have more things to talk about.
Speedpop is an app that acts as a popcorn delivery service. This service would be run by cinemas, and would allow customers to order popcorn and concessions from their favorite cinema – straight to their door. Because of the pandemic, cinemas are closing down and losing business as not many people are going back to cinemas, either because of Covid, streaming, etc. So in order to stay in business, cinemas could deliver their concessions directly to customers.
I eventually settled on the Speedpop idea as this was more unique and serviced a current problem that exists with cinemas.
