Week 2 – Composition and Perspective

This week we were split into groups of 10 to come up with 100 world ideas. Some of our ideas included a world with half human-bugs, an arctic world, a lava world and a ghost world where the world gradually withers away. We were then split into smaller groups to narrow those ideas down to 5, then to 1 final idea. My group consists of me, Eimear, Liam, Lydia and Odhran. Our 5 ideas were a neo-noir sci-fi world, a 20’s supernatural world, ancient Ireland, feudal Japan and an 80’s serial killer world. Out of these 5 worlds, we chose a 20’s supernatural world as our final idea.

As the focus for week 2 was composition and perspective, for homework we were asked to do 12 thumbnail drawings of composition studies based on our world theme, considering either one, two or three point perspective. The more I drew and practiced with each thumbnail, finding the right perspective became much easier. I also did the homework digitally which helped as I could use grids and add my own vanishing points to help find a perspective that worked best for each thumbnail.

I also looked at perspective in one of my favourite animations, Coco. I found this difficult yet interesting to do as it was something new to me. I need to practice looking at perspective much more as it is still something I find difficult, however,  it is now something I think of much more when drawing and I’m excited to see how my skills develop further.
