Panopto includes an easy to use, basic video editor.
To start editing a video located in your personal Panopto folder, hover your mouse over the video thumbnail and click the Edit button:
You can change the title by clicking the tile field, then type the new title and press Return on your keyboard.
To edit your video, click and drag your mouse in the timeline at the bottom of the screen. This creates a highlighted area. Highlighted areas are skipped over during playback. in the example below, a number of areas are highlighted, and therefore “edited out” of the final video.
The waveform at the bottom of the edit window represents the loudness of your recorded voice or audio. This helps visualise spoken words and sentences:
Use the zoom slider to zoom in and out on the timeline to make more precise edits:
The vertical red line is called the play ahead. It shows you the point in the video currently played. When using the zoom function, the timeline zooms in on the play ahead.
The highlighted parts in the timeline are skipped over during playback. The play ahead will skip them, letting you audition the your edits. You can drag the boundaries of an edit with you mouse, and you can get rid of an edit by dragging the left and right boundaries over each other.
Once you have edited your video, click Apply. This will render a new, edited, version of the video. You can go back to editing the video later if you need to, and your edits will still present. This is know as non-destructive editing. Once the video is processed and you are happy with your edits, you can submit your video.
Inserting a clip or video
You can also insert video clips within your video. This is useful if you want to add a youtube video, or add content which you missed at the time of the recording of the video.
Click the + icon in the editor and choose the type of content you would like to add.
Select the type of media you would like to add. To add another clip already present in your Panopto Folder, choose Add a clip.
Choose the clip you want to insert from your Folder by clicking the button next to your chosen video and click Insert.
The media will be added in the timeline at the play ahead.
Click Apply for the changes to take effect.
