Reflection on Character Animator:

What Does a Character Animator Do?

Character animators create and design characters using animation software, 3D modelling, 2D animations, and also puppetry. These creative professionals develop characters that use movement to tell a story, whether it’s for film, television, video games or mobile applications.

Character animators create then manipulate animated characters to interact in digital environments by using computer software such as MotionBuilder 3D, Flash Professional, LightWave, Maya and other programs. They also draw storyboards, create models, and design environments. Character animators work with sound engineers to make sure movements are in harmony with sound, and they work with clients to help pitch ideas and develop concepts.

Character animators can work in film and video production studios, advertising agencies, and public relations firms, and for software publishers, computer systems design firms, graphic design firms, game design firms, and web design firms.

Reflecting on the job to be an Animation Production Intern, I really like this job option due to how it will allow interns to gain insight into production responsibilities, workflows and processes.

Task 3:

  • Find a junior or mid level artist/animator currently working in that role/you like

  • Research that person – Linkedin – Twitter – Instagram –Personal Website etc

  • Where did they begin their career? How did they get their current position

  • Can you find a portfolio/Showreel? Can you find older work?

  • What does their Journey say to you on what you need to do?

They began their career in animation and being a storyboard artist by first studying at CalArts and then graduating in May 2021. Soon after graduating they had been offered a position from Netflix to work as a story artist with them on their upcoming animated shows.

Showreel:

Their journey lets me know that it is possible for graduates to study a wide range of animation and art skills and techniques, then being able to narrow this down into what you are best at and pursue further as a career. They have also shown me that it is possible to graduate and get a job in the industry very soon after.
