WEEK 6 – WORLD BUILDING / ONE-ON-ONE TUTORIALS

This week we were able to move into the Design A World group that we enjoyed most, and although I loved the ideas and concepts that I and other groups thought of together, the group that I returned to was Group 3 with the shattered world.

Learning from what I felt I could improve upon from last week, I wanted to use more real-life references for the character designs in order to give them more effective designs as well as to see how I could improve or add my own spin to the character.

I wanted to look at the main character’s personality and body shaped this week focusing on her movements and how she would interact with the world around her.

Name: Beau
Height: 7”
Weight: Large/Rounded
Mannerisms: Sluggish, Lazed, Slow
Walking: Stomps

The character, Beau, was difficult for me to try and draw in my style and I was not sure the design for him was as good as it could possibly be. I wanted to do my own takes of how to make his character more stylised yet also as a simple yet effective character. He is the mushroom based character from our world, so I wanted to keep him made of simple shapes as well as large and round to keep his interesting silhouette.

My influences came from Final Fantasy VII’s Cait Sith’s Moogle, Ghibli’s Totoro and Kirby. I also wanted to look at the mushroom cap as hat shaped and how different shapes and sizes effective the end result of the characters appearance. He is meant to be a grumpy and sluggish character, so I experimented with the idea of him having a comically large cap in order to cast an effective shadow as well as effect.

The group still were unsure of a design for our Crystal/Ice based character, so I showed them an old concept I had created, and we merged it with another member’s design. This gave us an effective character who we all liked the design of, and we hope to use in the final animation.

ONE-TO-ONE TUTORIALS:

On Thursday morning, for Week 6, I had a meeting with Sarah to discuss how I am coping in the class through the current circumstances, what my experience has been with online classes, and about my work so far. Currently, I am on track and up to date with my work and have been enjoying all of the lesson content. I look forward to the coming weeks of animating!
