For this group presentation we were tasked with creating a poster analysing a nations animations industry. After getting into our groups we needed to choice which nation we would be analysing. The options given to us were Irish, American, Japanese, British, Canadian, French, Korean or Russian. Whilst discussing it was difficult not to consider the titans America and Japan for their vast animation industry. However, after doing some quick research on each nation that interested us we decided to go for France as we saw opportunities of talking points as well as being fans of French animations prior to this task.

Now that we have decided to go for the French animation industry we then needed to decide on an angle that we would analyse from to group our points together instead of covering completely different topics with no correlation to each other. One of our first ideas was to talk about Frances artistic expression in animation covering topics such as, how French animators prioritise artistic vision over commercial profit and how French animation captures themes of philosophy, existentialism and cultural identity. However, after further debate and feedback we thought this angle would have been difficult to attack as the French did not have one overarching style and most of their work is outsourced.

We then decided a safer and easier way of analysing the industry was to split it up into decades and analyse the important topics that happened in that specific time period. When splitting up the decades I chose to analyse the 1990s-2000s.

My analysis started off broad with general searches trying to find the important milestones for the French animation industry within the 90s and 2000s. after a bit of research I realised that this was the decades that 3d animations started to grow. This was also close to the time that a French company set up a film festival. I decided to make these my main area of analysis. I found out that in France 3d animations started off like most other nations, that was in the form of fighter jet simulators for the French army however it wasn’t until the 80s companies would start buying 3d software for commercial and advertisement use. I also wanted to in research into first French produced 3d animations to compare them to the titans like Disney. as well as this I also thought it was important to show the Frenches innovative use of 3d, specifically in the movie ‘The Triplets of Belleville’. Finally, I discussed the creation of the film festival called imagina. Imagina was created by the Institute National de l’Audiovisual and showcased computer graphics and communication technologies.

When creating the poster, we like the thought of making it look like a journal as is all of the images were stuck down by hand and the page was washed in brown. We added images from some notable French animations like Arcane made different boxes to separate each members text.
