Ground mushrooms
This week I have started making all the different types of mushrooms for our group due to another group member being unable to. I started with a ground type to be used as foliage. Below are the reference images I found to help me model it.
I wanted to make a small cluster of mushrooms with round heads and curved twisty stems so after looking at these images for reference I created my first mushroom model.
I wanted to make it low poly as it will be used as foliage and therefor the model will be used many many times. After finishing modelling I then UV mapped it and brought it into Substance Painter to texture. Again I looked at the reference images I found to help me get the right look.
Tree mushroom type 1
Next I moved on to creating two different types of mushrooms to go on the tree starting with strange coloured flat top ones to be dotted around the outside of the tree. I first gathered images to use as references.
After seeing the kind of shape I needed to use I started modelling and to help get variation of the mushroom I created 3 different ones of different sizes. I made sure to smooth the mesh after to make them look natural.
My next step was to UV map the models and texture them. Using my reference images I textured them with strange bright colours in a striped pattern with white dots and drew on bumps on the underside. I feel the bright colours will really add a magical feel to the fairy realm.
Tree mushroom type 2
Finally I made one more type of mushroom to go on the tree. These ones will be used as steps for the fairies and will lead up the outside and inside of the tree. I will need them to be flat top mushrooms again but also small and not have strange colours so I found more reference images to look at.
After looking at these images I began modelling and again I created 3 different types of them of different sizes and shapes to get better variation. I even smoothed the mesh.
Finally I textured the mushrooms. I used regular mushroom colours and added white stipes and bumps on the underside.
After finishing all these models I sent them off to the rest of my group for some feedback and even tested how they all look in Unreal. The rest of my group seemed happy with them and I like how they look in Unreal. I just have to put them into my scene now.
