Week 5 – Continuing model making

Continuing Model making

This week I continued making models and ticking them off the asset list. This week I made 5 different rock models and 3 trees.

I started with the rock models. I knew they would have to be places many times in the environment so I made sure to create 5 variations. To make them I got a poly cube, added some extra divisions, and them started sculpting the faces to make it look more natural. I made sure to keep them low poly. Below are the models and the reference image I used while making them. I found it really helped as at the start I really struggled to create a natural looking low poly rock.

Uv mapping them was easy enough as they were just complicated boxes. When texturing them I used a base rock material, made it like a light grey and even made it slightly shiny. I also masked the edges to make them look worn out. Below is the final look in  Unreal.

The other models I made this week were 3 tree variations. I have made trees before and although it can be a lengthy process I found it fairly simple. I started by making the tree trunks. I used the sweep mesh took to make them curved and then again to create to branches. The trunk may not look that rounded but it is low poly and I feel that it will look good in the game. Next I got to work on the leaves. I found a png image of some pine leaves ( after discussing with my group we decided pine trees would be best) and edited it in photoshop to make an alpha map. I then brought that into Maya and applied it to a 2D plane as the texture. I then copy and pasted the plane to create a branch of leaves. I then just copied that branch for the others, changing it slightly for different sizes and shapes, until the tree was finished. I used a reference Image for how the leaves should be angled on a pine tree to help me. Below is one of the models with all the leaves and the reference image.

I did the same process for the other trees expect I made their trunks a lot more curved. After I made them all I UV mapped them and textured them in substance painter. Below are the final trees in Unreal.

That is all I got done this week however I am very happy with how my models are looking, especially the trees.
