week 1 – Vertical slice project

Vertical slice project

In our first lecture this week we were told about our new assignments, the main one being the Vertical slice project were we will work in teams with the Games design students to make a vertical slice of a game. Below is the full brief we were given.

This year we have teamed up with the Games Design Course and their 2nd year students.  In teams comprised of students from both courses, you are tasked with creating a game prototype.

This will involve the creation of a story driven vertical slice that focuses on developing artistic elements of the game. The prototype should demonstrate the use of art and animation assets informed by a pre-production plan.  The development of the prototype should be undertaken within a contemporary games engine.

This project expands on the skills, processes, planning and research from the first semester and looks to add more professional practices to your workflow, communications and reflective outlook. This assignment is intended to give an insight into a studios professional process from concept to development and final polish, with weekly feedback/critiques helping to refine these different stages.

Animation students will be primarily focused on the art direction, art assets and animation on the project.  The games design students will focus on the Narrative Design, Game mechanics & Level design.  There will be plenty of opprtunity to collaborate & shape ideas and direction during pre-production.

Animation students have been asked to select their preffered role prior to week 1, these roles can be flexible as the type of game that your team design may need you to cross into different production areas.
We were then divided into teams and got to know our team members. We then spent the rest of the day discussing what type of game we wanted to make. Over the week we then set up a Miro board and each began putting in our own ideas for the game. Below is the brainstorm we did.
Next week will we work on deciding a set idea and start planning.
