Week 4 – 3D modelling artist

3D modelling artist

This week I looked deeper into the job role of a 3D modelling artist and what the skills and requirements are for the job. From previously looking at the job I learned exactly what a 3D modelling artist is.

A 3D modelling artist creates the 3D models and assets for an animation or game.

I also looked at some examples of job applications and learned what is looked for in an applicant. After some further research I have managed to find out exactly what type of skills are required for the job role:

  • Experience and proficiency in Maya, Zbrush, Blender ands other 3D modelling software
  • Good communication skills
  • Good team work skills
  • Knowledge of animating techniques, character design and rigging
  • Ability to UV map and texture models
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Organisation and time management skills
  • Good visualisation and imagination skills
  • Ability to take constructive criticism and follow a set artistic style

Some of the skills are common ones while others are specific to this job role, like having experience in 3D modelling software. While these skills are important for the job one of the main parts of the application that will be looked at extensively will be the showreel and/or portfolio. For this job role in particular it would be important to show the following in the showreel as they relate most to what the job entails:

  • Your best 3D models first
  • Examples of models done in past jobs
  • Examples of fully textured models ( ones you textured yourself)
  • Models you rigged

Work that would not want to be seen in the showreel include:

  • Low quality work
  • Partially created work or incomplete work
  • Examples of animation
  • 2D work
  • Concept drawings

These would be unwanted in the showreel as they either would give a bad impression of your work quality or simply do not apply to the job role.

From looking at the job role and different job applications for it I would say it is an achievable entry level job that I would be very interested in. I believe I will try tailor my assignment 2 industry facing material towards this type of job role.

3D environment artist

Another job role that also interests me that I have talked about before is a 3d environment artist. They are quite similar to a 3d modeller except they focus on creating the landscape within games be it indoor or outdoor areas. The skills required for this job  are similar again:

  • Experience in 3d modelling software such as Maya, Zbrush and Unreal Engine
  • Good team work skills
  • Good time management and organisation skills
  • Respond well to constructive criticism
  • Knowledge of geography, architecture and good drawing skills
  • Experience with various pipelines

As for the showreel, the employer would want to see examples of:

  • Previous landscapes created
  • textures used in landscapes
  • Cinematics of landscapes

This type of job would be another that I would be greatly interested in applying for in the future as it is a good entry level job however for the purpose of assignment 2 I think I will focus on the role of a 3D modelling artist.
