Week 10 – Sculpting

Sculpting

This week I went into Blender and started modelling my penguin. I used metaballs to get the basic shape and was able to use my final character design as a reference image the size and proportions. After I got the body shape right I then added on the eyes, nose and feet.

It was after I finished all this did I realise I should model the penguin in a T-pose then move the arms down to his side, rather than try form the arms out of the body which did not look very good. So I re did the body this time modelling it in a T-pose then using the pose tool I bent the arms down. I found this process quite difficult and after some help i was told to try use the mask tool first then the pose tool so I wasn’t deforming the body with the arms.

Finally I finished the basic sculpting of the model by creating the hat and glasses. The glasses were simple enough to do as I just had to create a cube, mirror it and extrude it multiple times to form it into glasses. However I did have some trouble with this and did end up creating some inverted faces and nonmanifold geometry but I managed to fix this with some help. The hat was a bit more complicated to make than anticipated since the concept drawing I did shows a 2D hat and therefore was not mush help when it came to modelling a 3D one. After some brief researching I found several good reference images to help me model the hat.

Overall I am very happy with how my model is going so far.
