helmet render

Week 5 // Substance Painter – Helmet

This week we learnt about Substance Painter! After I loaded it up, it all looked very overwhelming so I was a little worried about whether or not I’d find it difficult to texture any models. After a while and through watching the videos, I felt a lot more reassured and I found it a lot less scary; the only thing that was stressful was accidentally pressing all the shortcuts for blender :’)

Our task in class was to texture a Warhammer model! After getting used to it, I found it very fun and I really liked doing the task (little bit worried about the next task though). This was my final render of my model after texturing it in substance and exporting it in to blender:

Our task for homework was to create our own helmet! For my inspiration, I immediately thought of the Mandalorian helmet and started to get a little bit of inspo from that however, I wanted to make it more cyberpunk themed (it’s something I’ve never tried before so I thought why not). These are the inspiration photos:

After  admittedly spending way too long looking between these, I sketched out a design for the helmet just so I could keep myself on track.

After this, I used this sketch inside of blender to help me out designing my helmet. This is what my final helmet model looked like in blender:

After his however, whenever I went to add seams, it seemed to be messing up; I realised that somehow all of my models had duplicated itself many times. I couldn’t find a way to work around this, so I re-made the model without a mirror modifier – this turned out a little bit different compared to the previous model. I went into substance and started texturing it. After everything was done, I went to bake so I could add a grass texture to it and my own design. I used a couple of tutorials to help me as I wanted the helmet to have a visor which would be see-through. These are the videos I used:

Whenever it baked, it came out with these weird dark shapes all around model and I couldn’t figure out a way to get rid of it so I decided to try make my helmet look ruined! The helmet looked kind of plain, so I decided to write my own text and add to the helmet for some writing!

I then exported this into blender , added an HDRI environment and some lights, and this is what the final model looks like:

Now when I’m using blender, I’m pressing all of the shortcuts for substance :’D
