Week 4 // UV Mapping & Texturing

Week 4, we learnt about UV mapping and texturing. When it was introduced, I really wanted to learn about it but I thought it was going to be super hard and I would struggle to do it but the exercises we done in class were really fun and it was a lot easier than I thought! 

 

In class, we got blender files of a dice, coke can and a hammer without any texture. Throughout the lesson, we learnt how to texture them to make them fit for each one. The hammer was the hardest as we had to mark seams but it was really fun to do! To get the textures in class, we used Photoshop and used images we were given to texture it.  These are my finished models textured!

For homework, we had to make our own sword and texture it ourselves using Photoshop (or Krita for me). It was a little scary when I began the assignment because I didn’t know what I was going to do so I looked up on Pinterest for a reference and this was my favourite sword!

I liked the way it looked however, I didn’t really like the colours so I used this sword for more inspiration:

In the middle of doing my assignment, I realised I made a mistake somewhere and I wasn’t too sure what to do so I kept experimenting; I finally got it after merging two vertices which didn’t seem to be there! After I finished my model, I started to do the UV mapping part of the assignment. After I had all my marks seamed and everything looked alright, I decided to re-arrange them in a way which made a little more sense to me and would make it easier to actually add the textures. This is what it looked like:

After this, I labelled everything in Krita so I knew what part of the model was what.

I used a few different textures however, parts of my sword looked really plain so I decided to go in on my own and add a few details. For the blade, I added an extra shade to make it look like there was an ident on it and for the two speheres, I drew my own little designs just to make it look a bit better!

I also decided to add a black outline to my sword to make it look more ‘cartoony’ and make it look like it would be in some sort of game! When it came to animating my sword, I used a background photo for it that would match my animation. This is what my final model looks like and the animation link:
