Week 7 + 8 // Intro to sculpting and character design

This week, we began learning more about soft sculpting and our next assignment! In class, we done two tasks so that we could get used to soft sculpting in blender.

Our first task was for us to learn how to use different tools, in class Mike made a rock however in the middle of me sculpting my cube, it kinda starting looking like cheese? So I tried to run with it and make it look like it had holes in it! I looked up a reference of a cartoonish looking cheese block and used that to help me:

This is what the final thing looks like:

After this, we had to sculpt a face in blender. I don’t think I’m really good at getting proportions right so I looked up different references on Pinterest to try help me:

I found it a little hard to do because I kept feeling like I was messing up but I’m proud that I was able to do it. I decided to try make it look like a statue!

Our homework for this week was to research Genndy Tartakovsky and make some concept art for our next assignment using his style. I decided to look at references on Pinterest and made a board of all his characters which I like! I liked the style of his character in Samurai Jack and I liked the goofiness of the characters in Hotel Transylvania. One thing about his art style I noticed was that he over exaggerates all their features, mainly using sharp triangles/ edges and also either making his characters extremely skinny or very tall and wide. I also added a few drawings/ characters from other artists that looked like they had the same type of art style. Whilst using inspiration from his well known movies/ shows, I also just looked at his art on his Instagram and took a lot of inspiration from that! I also watched videos about him and re-watched Hotel Transylvania.

I already knew that I want my character to look intimidating but friendly (like a big friendly giant). Before I sketched this though, I decided to do very quick sketches of monsters which I thought were cool. For the first girl, I wanted her to give off like a goth vibe similar to Mabel from Hotel Transylvania and like Maleficent. For the girl, I wanted her to look bouncy to show her personality and wanted her to look like a devil! The skeleton dude I just thought looked funny and wanted him to have a vintage gothic vibe and the last scientist guy, I took inspiration from Dexter’s Laboratory and wanted to sketch him similar to Vector from Despicable me as a scientist!

After this I realized, I wanted to do a human. To do this I sketched out a few different characters to see which one I liked the most! After starting to draw the characters, I noticed I wanted him to look bulky and kind of grumpy like an old man.

After drawing all of them, this was the character I liked the most and I thought I would make him like a detective. I also drew a few different props so that I could see which one I would like the most:

This week we focused on how to sculpt more of the body rather than just the head. For our first task, I decided to sculpt the top half of a body! To do this, I looked up references on Pinterest to use to help me sculpt my character; I decided to go for a troll/ something inhumane to try something new!

Sculpting this for me was a lot easier compared to the first time I done the head and I was able to add more detail without it looking uneven/ rough. This is what the final render looks like:

I also drew my full character turnaround before making my model! I realised that he was meant to be in a ‘t’ pose, so I decided to add his arms in at the side for what they’d look like!
