Week 4 // Colour

This week we began learning colour! Colour was something I was super nervous to learn about as I felt like it’s so difficult to understand and put into practice unless you have experience. Watching the videos and listening to Sarah in class eased me A LOT. It made it a lot easier for me to understand and I’m super excited to colour my drawings!  I also watched a few videos about colour theory to help me understand!

Our first activity was to create 5 colour palettes for our world and characters! I used Adobe colour to make mine and these were the ones I came up with for each world!

For the first one, I chose ‘Pirate Mice’. I picked these colours because I wanted the scene to look stormy and like they were at sea!

This colour palette is for ‘Ferret Heist’. When I first thought of the idea, I wanted it to look like it was in a desert and it had like a cowboy theme to it:

I picked blues and greens for the ‘Frog Sitcom’ because I wanted the colours to be bright as I wanted the animation to be funny and bubbly!frog colour

This colour palette is for ‘Dracula Sitcom’. I picked purples as I wanted it to seem dark/ mysterious.

This is the colour palette for ‘Deer Hunts Humans’; I wanted it to have muted colours/ darker colours to make it look scarier.deer hunts humans colour

Next our group took photos of anything which had a monochromatic, analogous and complementary colour scheme. After we took these photos, we had to create a colour palette from the images. I used adobe colour again for this and these are the photos and colour palettes!

monochromatic photo

This was the first photo we took for monochromatic. When looking at this photo, it feels lonely/ empty.

analogus photo

We took this photo for analogous (it’s a little hard to see D’:) but when looking at it, it feels warm and tense/ scary because it looks like something is on fire.

complimentary photo 2

This was an extra photo but we thought this was complimentary. It feels kind of chaotic because the colours contrast, it has a sci-fi kind of feeling.

This photo is another complimentary colour palette! I personally really like this one; it seems very isolated and cold.

The next activity in class was to take 2 colour schemes and palettes we created in the last two tasks and re-work it into one of our drawings from last week’s task. I found it difficult to use two palettes for this as my drawing was based on a frog version of ‘The Office’ so I tried to find colours which were bright to show comedy! The colour palettes from the photos we took were dark and I wasn’t sure how to use them however, I decided to try experiment a little and see what it looks like; the second one I wanted it to look more dramatic!

After this, our group decided to speak a little bit more about our world idea. We felt that there were so many ideas, it got too complicated and made our group feel lost so we decided to change the idea to a TV show where there are 3 different channels instead of 5/6.

Our group got swapped for the final time; it now had me, Heather, Rebecca, Max, Rae and Niamh. After we explained how we wanted to change the idea to 3 shows instead of 6 and we all came up with more ideas to add to our world. Having 3 channels meant 2 people could work on 1 animation each! We also had an idea to do a frog version of ‘The Office’, the pirate mice got changed to more of a news channel and the ferret heist was like a movie, similar to ‘Ocean’s 11’.s

When thinking of Ocean’s 11, I thought about using this colour palette as it would look confident and would make the characters stand out!

As a mini icebreaker, we played ‘exquiste corpse’ to draw parts of a monsters body and fold over the paper and pass it to someone else to draw another body part. I found our monsters super funny and I really liked them!

For our homework exercise, we had to  come up with character descriptions. We found this a little hard because all our characters are animals however, we just decided for the frog sitcom to base it off of characters from ‘The Office’ such as Michael Scott and Jim Halpert. For the news channel, we decided to make the mice just wear suits! And for the Ferret Heist, we had the idea to make it similar to a scene from Ocean’s 11 where everyone shows off their different types of abilities/ skill sets that they have! These were the ideas we came up with:

Our homework task was to sketch out some designs for our characters. I decided to try do a page for each character that would be included in the different worlds! I struggled a little with the raccoon one but I like the way it turned out! I also used the living lines library to help with movement for these characters as well as a bunch of references on pinterest!
