This week we looked at colour theory. There are 4 main colour schemes used, monochromatic, complementary, analogous and triadic. I have applied these colour schemes to a few practice thumbnails.

I reused one of the thumbnails from the perspective work. It had pre established values, so it helped add the colours with the multiply setting on a layer above. I used one hue of purple and that created a monochromatic image. I used blue and yellow, which are complementary colours, on the 2nd image. For the 3rd image I used the triadic colour scheme, blue with yellow and red. Finally I used the analogous colour scheme of yellow, orange and red with a bit of purple for balance.

I also practiced making colour scripts to portray certain feelings in scenes. A monochrome sickly, foggy scene with some slight green to accentuate a lonely and desolate place. The second piece juxtaposes the first with a peaceful sunset. Warm purple shadows with yellow reflections on the rocks from the sun and dynamic light rays.

I investigated and analysed a few scenes from different animations. The scene with lord Shen in ‘Kung FU PANDA 2’ encapsulates his psychopathic malevolence with almost a full monochromatic shot, violent red surrounding him. The ‘Princess and the Frog’ scene is an example of a complementary colour scheme. The blue in the scene shows Tiana’s melancholy feelings in that scene but the tiny amount of orange portrays the sliver of hope still left in her. This scene from ‘Sword Art Online’ has muted tones of the sunset which has a sad yet dreamy-like quality to it.
