This week we were shown tonal value. This refers to the lightness and darkness in a composition and It helps create a sense of shape and depth. Speaking of shape, I performed some exercises on the tonal value of the 3 shapes above. I enjoyed figuring out how to make them look like they are in a 3d environment and think they turned out successful.

We were tasked to create more thumbnails on our environments for the world. I used my previous knowledge of perspective and tonal value for these scenes and think they turned out very well for concept art.

Another technique for tonal value and shading is hatching (placing lines closer or further away in parallel) and crosshatching (when lines are placed at an angle to another). I tried this out on a neo-Tokyo, cyberpunk setting but I believe my hatching skills need improvement as it looks messy and not as pleasing to the eye. What I am happy with, however, is the composition.

These are references for the tonal value thumbnails.
