This was a big week for me as I was one of the people in my group chosen to switch teams over to a different project, this being group 2, who had come up with a world similar to that of SpongeBob SquarePants where it is an underwater world where all of the inhabitants are underwater life evolved in a form similar to humans, with each species having their own specialties based on their abilities and personalities. This was a very fun and pleasant world to jump into while also being a direct contrast to the gritty and dangerous world I was previously working on.

This week in class we were working on tone and value when drawing and creating worlds, particularly discussing light values, line weight, different shading techniques, etc. For this week’s homework, we were tasked with creating more thumbnails, this time making use of the Tone and Value lessons we learned from this week’s lesson. After creating these thumbnails, I must then choose one to expand upon and add more detail in the linework and consider further the values we learned from this week’s lesson to bring up the quality of the image.

When creating these thumbnails I researched images which I could use as reference, ranging from pictures of New York City, Shark Tale, SpongeBob SquarePants, Finding Nemo, Outdoor restaurants, taxis and vans, fish species like Sturgeons etc. so I can use them as a guide for how I should interpret them for this world as these were some of the main inspirations of the world and the type of things that would populate it. If I were to improve upon this work or do it again differently, I should definitely use some more darker values and have more populated city areas, however I believe I was able to properly communicate the tone of the world we as a team are creating. The thumbnail I chose to expand on is the first one which I made a point to separate, I added a lot more detail to the world, such as advertisements, darker shading using cross-hatching, and various signs on the faces of the buildings to make the world feel more lived-in. I believe this upgrades it to a point where it communicates the feel of the world better than the other thumbnails.
