I was struggling a bit to come up with concepts for this assignment. I went through a bunch of different themes and possibilities. I could probably do anything really for assignment; I was really focused on doing animals like birds, otters, dogs, etc. I’d been thinking about what I wanted to do for this assignment from the start of the semester but when it got down to drawing concepts I was stumped. I was drawn to doing like an adventurer/merchant animal character and I was drawn to the bird character concepts I seen on Pinterest. I did some concepts (seen below) but I really didn’t like them and didn’t think they were cute at all. I also thought it was too difficult a concept to sculpt as someone whose never really sculpted before and I wasn’t sure if it would be something recommended to try and attempt as a beginner. Also I think if I was to try and do a sculpt of this sort of character, it might be better to work off an existing concept. I eventually scrapped these ideas and went to think of something else.

After leaving it for a few days I remembered seeing those pictures of capybaras chilling in Japanese hot springs surrounded by citrus fruits. I thought that could make a cute character/scene. Having a capybara sitting a little hot tub with an orange on their head. I looked on sketchfab out of curiosity and found this:

Capybara Relaxing by Felipe Blanco on Sketchfab

Something like this seemed a lot more achievable and was pretty much what I had imagined. This was motivating but it also meant I had to make my own concept a bit more unique.

This was my first concept:

I liked the idea but I wasn’t quite sold on it yet. So I changed it up a bit and ended up with this one:

I ended up going with this as my final concept, I think both capybaras having legs and the larger capybara’s body sticking out over the tub makes it a lot cuter. I also simplified the eyes a bit more and gave it colour.
