I was a bit nervous about this assignment prior to starting it. Sculpting has always seemed intimidating and easy to mess up. I was really excited about the theme though and I was researching and looking at a lot of cute character references in advance. Once it came to coming up with my own concept, I had a bit of a creative block but in the end I’m happy with the idea I came up with and I think I executed as best I could. I knew I should try and keep the idea simple and we had to bake this to a low poly mesh later, then there was also retopology to worry about. Although, I would like to try something more complicated if I were to do this again.
This project was a great opportunity to learn more about Blender for 3D work since I’ve only exclusively used Maya before. I think Blender has more tutorials and references for help with your projects. I’m still a little wary of organic character sculpting, but if I practice and work on more projects I’ll have more confidence with it. I really like it for detailing hard surface models though.
