Perspective Studies
One point perspective used in this screenshot from the anime film Your Name. I also decided to do a trace over of the shapes used that make up the composition of this shot, to better figure out how it is used in animation and apply it to my own composition thumbnails as part of this homework. It took me a little bit to actually figure out where the vanishing point here was and where I needed to draw the perspective lines.
Another screenshot from Your Name, this time using two point perspective. The vanishing points in this scene are really far out of our line of sight giving a wider field of view, also making it a little more challenging for me to figure out the perspective lines here as well.
Two point perspective used for this house scene in the Netflix film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. Scenes with buildings in them make it easier to pinpoint what perspective the shot is in and also act as a great guide to marking out the perspective lines.
Thumbnail sketches (digital & sketchbook)
- Overview shot, triangular composition + framing, 1-point perspective – stick figure silhouette for scale, northern lights + sea creatures all flowing to one central point
2.
4. Omnious atmosphere, circular composition, looming octopus, cracked earth – sea creatures and northern lights flow through cracks. Adventurer peers in.
It was a struggle to come up with multiple different ideas for environments for a single world. I found it easier to just sketch out objects and layouts with a basic brush and no pen pressure to figure out scenes as opposed to carefully marking out shapes using tone and value. I find when I start doing laying down shapes it takes me a long time to finish a thumbnail. For the thumbnails I did finish, I was focusing on implementing the aquatic theme of the spirit world and also trying to emphasise that the sea creatures are swimming through the sky and the world’s floating islands. I think adding in a small silhouetted figure helped to show the depth of the world.
