Week 1

With the year starting off, our first new assignment is a group assignment in which we aim to create a location based on several prompts, these prompts include a lab, an observatory, but the one I chose was a Futuristic city, as I’m fascinated with exploring the design philosophies of retro-futurism, an art movement which I have been heavily invested in since my mid to late teens.

With my prompt decided, I was then put into a group with a few other members, Emma (EJ)  Daniel, Harry, and Jessica.

Our first order of business was to start by coming up with concepts for the city. Dan got chatting with the rest of the group and he began coming up with several concepts for the city using thumbnails.

Once he had finished the thumbnails and the concepts for the city, we started beginning work on the rough mock-ups for the 3d city, each of us to create our own version of the city, which we would later animate and film in the Unreal engine.

We knew that each city was going to be different in scale and in assets, so each of us began work on our own projects at this point, I wanted to start work on the smaller detail of the sidewalk, with it curving around the fountain.

First I started with a simple block, and by shrinking it down and adjusting the subdivisions, I was able to create this slab.

The extra edges allowed me to create a slope on each end…However, realizing my mistake partway through, I realized that not only would I need to not only create more subdivisions in width, but also in-depth, so I was forced to remake the slab…which didn’t take too long.

My plan was to create a line of slabs that lead up to the fountain, which I would then bend each slab round this circle and make the shape around the fountain. I created an outline and a base for me to gain a decent reference from and began to bend the first slab round, hoping to create this look.

My hope for this is to be an adjustable model that the rest of the group can end up using.
