This week we went over tone and value learning fundamentals such as form and light, simplifying value, and lines. We did a variety of activities to practice value then applied what we learned to our group work exploring the worlds we created.

My initial tonal study was not great and I ended up redrawing and using this study as a developmental sketch, changing aspects of the composition

Original Sketch:

My Sketch:                                   Reference Image:

I wanted to challenge myself, moving away from traditional and instead exploring digital for my tonal studies and then line study.

The line exercise was insightful and I was able to explore technique and tools on Krita.

Then we had to draw three of our world environments. I redrew one of my thumbnails for this activity showing a desert scene. Our story is based around a band set in an apocolyptic world. I tried to focus on that with my three world thumbnails.

Thumbnail 1:

This shows a city view from a broken window, I attempted to use one point perspective. I wanted the moon to illuminate the scene and make it stand out contrasting with the darker tone of the city.

Thumbnail 2:

This thumbnail shows a desert scene where our main characters drive past in a car. I wanted to show a variation of setting and show the band traveling from one area to another getting a good feel of the word the story is set in!

Thumbnail 3:

This is a concert scene, I wanted to make the lights stand out with the slightly illuminated stage with the bands instruments. I kept it simple with only a few smaller items including bin bags and nuclear waste canisters scattered throughout the scene!

To practice drawing these I did a truck study

I used multiple reference images of trucks at different angles for my study.  I also referenced my original thumbnail sketch of the scene.

From here I chose a final thumbnail image to make a detailed larger study with tone and value considered, I did two too change the composition!

Movie Analysis

TMNT- Mutant Mayhem

This scene uses tone and value to show contrast between the dark city and bright moon. I felt that this movie related to my groups world because of the mutant aspect of it. The power imbalance between humans and mutants is shown which is something we wanted to explore in our world. This scene shows the turtles traveling in the night, there silhouettes barley visible if not only for the bright moon illuminating the scene. The buildings are darker while the background is lighter creating a sense of depth and scale. The huge city can be seen stretching back for miles. The scene has one point perspective coming from the moon. The busy composition adds to the scene and reflects the chaos and conflict experienced in this world which we also wanted to explore in our world. There is clear tonal variation shown especially in the city lights. The neon colours appear white and stand out from the dark buildings.

Danger Days NANANA music video- My Chemical Romance

This scene is from one of my favorite music videos. I loved the desert and post apocalyptic aspects of it and felt it fit with my groups world perfectly. This scene in particular inspired some of my world thumbnails. Something I noticed when analyzing the tone and value is that desert and countryside scenes in the media I analyzed has little to no tonal variation, The sky often blends in with the horizon and the foreground which I believe adds to the scenes. It gives the appearance of depth. The scenes feel isolated with little infrastructure and people. In this scene the tree, car and electricity poles are darker contrasting with the lighter backgrounds with little variation at all

I also chose this scene, I felt that it fit within the world and wanted to analyse the tonal value for future reference. The composition is simple but I love the layout, how all the characters and their personality are shown. The tonal value creates depth with the closer characters being darker than the background where the lights shine though the blinds.

Paul

I chose this scene from Paul. I felt the movie reflected similar si-fi themes to our world. This scene is another example of what I discussed earlier with countryside and desert scenes having little tonal variation, here the little use of tonal variation makes the area seem bigger but the lack of depth also makes it look flat as if there is no real destination creating a feeling of isolation.

Avatar

The tone and value of this scene from Avatar creates a sense of leadership and opposition. The people stand out in this scene being illuminated by the bright city background. The idea of governmental systems and couruption as a theme in Avatar represents the world my group created very well and is a theme I want to try include in our world.
