I began to plan how I was going to create my car, as I found out quite quickly that modelling vehicle is very challenging. I followed a youtube tutorial that guided me step by step on how to start vehicle modelling, as it was my first time ever attempting to model something like this – I definitely needed a few tutorial to guide me along the way. I attempted to create my own car models, however i really struggled with creating these shapes and avoiding things like Ngons – My early car models were super blocky, this, obviously wouldn’t have worked as i wanted to create my scene with a realistic approach.

Moving Forward

Using this tutorial from On Mars 3D, I was able to learn a lot of new skills – in the past my instant approach to a complex shape would be to start trying to shape it from cubes and spheres. However, with this tutorial after gathering all my reference images – I started to gradually build up the shape using the EP curve tool in Maya. I found this quite challenging, I wasn’t very confident with these tools – The creator of this Youtube tutorial was very helpful and explained things extremely clearly.

Texture Experimenting

I spent roughly two weeks experimenting with the textures for my car and really struggled with finding a good texture as I couldn’t find a lot of reference images to base off. I received some feedback from this texture and decided to keep trying again. The issues I had with-these Textures consisted of:

  • too shiny
  • Looked too ‘fake’
  • It didn’t look good.

Updated Texture

I experimented with a red colour and added some broken glass which I felt was really nice.
